Cool atmosphere with amazing waiters and waitresses. However, while the hotel offered high chairs and pram spaces for babies, we were abruptly asked by the manager to leave because “a couple of guests were complaining” that our 6 month old daughter was being “loud”. Looking around, there was no one who looked annoyed and we even got complements on how cute our girl was from two customers. A very lousy and unprofessional way to ask a family of 6 to leave just as we were about to pay the bill. Food wasn’t good value anyway and there are plenty of better pubs in Balmain to try that do better pub feeds for cheaper. Would not recommend this place if you have a chatty baby or if you like good value food.

The service and general place was lovely. Also dog friendly which is an absolute bonus for me!
However, I found the food was a bit average. We got the sticky pork ribs and rib eye. The flavour of the sticky pork ribs was actually quite nice, but that was it. The salad was just lettuce which could’ve been improved at no real extra cost with even some red onion. Asked for rib eye cooked medium rare. It was medium, which is fine, but it was so dry. The mushroom gravy also tasted like it was made the night before and just reheated.
The staff were actually very friendly and nice so I’d put the general score at a 3.5.

Interesting choice having 1/4 of the venue bar which was full, 3/4 kitchen restaurant which was empty, forcing bar patrons into the cold for a seat in the middle of winter. Bar staff lovely, manager less than pleasant.

Paid $33 for a veal schnitzel. It was only a smallish schnitzel and some rocket, no chips or sides or anything. Felt super overpriced and the veal was very chewy. Also got told off by the owner for having a baby that made noise.

A great find as we wandered around Balmain. We had visited a couple of pubs and dropped in to The Royal Oak at lunchtime. The friendly welcome at the bar and the service is great. And the food is brilliant.

The Royal Oak Hotel consistently delivers the best pub steaks in Sydney! Their Angus Rump Steak is top-tier – tender, flavorful, and perfectly cooked every time. The $25 Angus Rump Steak, chips, gravy and drink deal on Tuesdays is unbeatable in quality and price. I challenge any pub in Sydney to top it!

The staff are always friendly, and the service is efficient, making every visit a great experience. It’s no wonder I keep coming back. If you’re looking for a great meal and a welcoming atmosphere, the Royal Oak is the place to be.
