Before I spent time at the Palmetum, I did not know there was a difference between the White Ibis and your average Bin Chicken, aka Brissy Dumpster Duck.

The White Ibis in residence, much like the other resident fowl and marsupials, remain shy around humans, though are not above surrounding you from the canopy in what I can only describe as an homage to Alfred Hitchcock.

The footpaths are generous and sturdy enough to allow a modest work truck mobility, so Granny's wheelchair and Junior's stroller should have little-to-no problem.

Resting opportunities and quiet is plentiful - as are the mozzies, so remember to spray your skin prior to entry.

While the wallabies - two species in residence - are not going to let you approach them, they are not averse to showing you their full three feet in height should you present yourself as a problem, though if you sit quietly on one of the many off-track seating opportunities, they might suss you out as they travel past you from point-A to point-B.

Try to capture the privilege on your phone for future accuracy of recall and braggable photography.

Photography opportunities are also plentiful.

The Palmetum is a good training ground for any budding outdoors photographer - birds, bugs, botanicals, and many other subjects for someone to hone their camera-eye and shutter-skills.

This is the atmosphere for couples wanting that Tropical Queensland couple's-portrait.

And, speaking of couples, as I'm typing this a couple of scrub turkeys have just shot by, seemingly off for some canoodling

One of my favourite Townsville parks. So well kept, and the different habitats are so cool. Especially the palm swamps and rainforest areas. They feel so natural that at times you forget you’re in a park, but they are also very accessible and tidy. Good balance

Nice and relaxing place to go for a walk. Plenty of seating if u want to bring your lunch or just sit around. Well kept gardens, nice and cool. Parking close by. Cafe on site and toilet access as well.

Having a picnic or walking through this palm garden is a relaxing and beautiful experience. Everything is labelled, and the landscaping is excellent. A very peaceful, relaxing, and beautiful way to pass the time. All must see this hidden gem!

Please like photos if they help you with your decisions. This place is a must if you enjoy peace and tranquillity. The leisurely walk through this park is well worth the trip here. Enjoy a coffee after you finished walking around or before for that matter. The trees are spectacular and cactus gardens a must see. Absolutely stunning!!
Total hidden gem but a must see for all!
Very tranquil, beautiful and energizing.
Make sure you also head out to the left to the Ross River then right 200m to the bridge where you will find loads of turtles waiting to say hi.
Park is open from sunrise to sunset. I’d suggest coming after 8am when the sun is up and shining on all the leaves and giving it a whole different look. Stunning.

So cool seeing all the different types of palms, succulents and other plants. Favourites are some palms that are off the track a bit and only have scientific name but says they're from the lessor Antilles and NE Colombia. They must be about 30+ metres tall and amazing layered palm fronds.
The blackhawk crash memorial and the rainforest walk area are definitely worth the visit as well.
