Mountain Devil Bed and Breakfast - Bilpin, New South Wales

Late review apologies, we stayed two nights as we had a Wedding in the Bilpin resort very convenient as it’s a 5 min drive there. The cottage has all the essentials and everything that you need. Breakfast was fantastic! fresh eggs, milk, bread and tea and coffee. The bed is a bit firm but they have the right amount of blankets to keep you warm plus a blanket warmer. It would of been nice to stay longer to see the vineyard. Thank you Jackie and Barry for letting us stay.

We don't usually book accommodation unless we are satisfied with reviews by previous guests. We made an exception for Mountain Devil B&B after talking to the owner and looking at photos and the description on their website. We made a further mistake in paying before arrival. Our expectation was an idyllic historic cottage in a vineyard. ||We found the address without any difficulty however the first warning sign was the crude signage by the roadside. On driving in we saw and old rundown shed and two adjoining cottages that had seen better days. Inside our cottage smelt damp, the window ledges & sills were dirty, window glass dirty, and there were cobwebs. Some of the cutlery and dishes were dirty and needed washing before use. ||From outside you walk into a small entry which leads to the bathroom on the left and on the right into the bedroom with another room containing the kitchen off the bedroom. There is no lounge as such. Outside the back door is a dirty old table & chairs which were not satisfactory to use. The rear view is onto a grass area fenced and occupied by the tenants of the front cottage. There is no vineyard. There is an orchard and the owner does make fruit wine. However, this does not constitute a vineyard. The kindest description of the orchard is unkempt because it is organic. Our stay was further marred by mosquitoes getting in through a wire door which did not close properly (fixed after we complained) and native marsupial mice which found their way indoors despite us keeping the doors and windows closed. The floor boards in the kitchen are rotten and have been covered with extra carpet so that you don't fall through. Hence the damp smell. ||The purpose of this review is to help others who may be considering staying here so that they know exactly what they are getting.

This place is not 5 star but for people who enjoy staying in places which are part of Australia's history. It is a little b&b which was part of an Inn built in 1867. It is very sweet - but certainly doesn't have anything like beautifully manicured gardens - and is very rustic outside. Inside, the bedding, table linen and towels, etc. are all extremely good and perfectly clean. The bed is lovely, extremely comfy and we were very warm at night. The place itself has been renovated from the early days and the kitchen is very conveniently set up with all you need to cook the "basket" breakfast which is left for you (which is the 'system' a number of other b&b's provide). The only thing we found not to satisfaction were that the Teflon egg rings weren't 'perfectly' clean. Everything else was really good. The kitchen has an 'eat-in' area and a fire (glassed-in) style. We lit it on the day/night we were staying 'in' but didn't do so on the day/night we were going out, as we didn't have time to do so. There is a perfectly adequate heater provided for when you don't light the fire - and this warms the place up very well. The light fittings are in keeping with 'older' décor and are very nice. There are large, comfortable 'lounge' chairs and the place is pleasantly carpeted. The furniture is also very nice 'older style'. The bathroom is modern and has everything you need. The whole place (inside) - bedroom, living room with kitchen area and bathroom - was very clean and very comfortable. The breakfast makings were great! Very good quality juice, cereals, yoghurt, milk, bread, butter, bacon and also fresh eggs and tomatoes, all of which made a delicious breakfast each day. There was ample (and great) tea, coffee and biscuits. There was an extremely good, modern TV for my husband (who is a bit of a TV 'addict') and a book shelf containing a number of books, if you wish to read.
