I love this hostel. I lived here for about 4 months. I lived in the campside and inside, and I can say that both are super cool. I got my job through David, the owner of the hostel. He's very friendly, and I can say that my stay here was really excellent and fun. I recommend this hostel 100%.

All in all a very enjoyable, affordable and long stay here in a cosy and well maintained dorm room. Good location for farm work and basic essential amenities in Huonville, with easy daily commutes to Hobart via bus services close by. Entertaining and enthusiastic owner called David makes guests feel welcome and he has good farm contacts for helping complete 88 days etc. In peak season place feels a bit cramped and there could be more showers, and laundry facilities could be improved, and kitchen is rather small, but as far as hostel standards go, I highly rate this place and would return if i came back to the Huon Valley. The atmosphere and friendliness of the other guests was top notch. 🙂

Been here for 2 months and it has been amazing, great house in Franklin with two cars to borrow. Also close to the owners house where he invites us for barbecues often. Recommend the place for everyone to stay! Amazing views as well!

I stayed at the Little Devil Backpackers hostel in Franklin. I got the place recommended from a close friend and I would definetly recommend it to someone else. During my stay I was provided with work in accordance with the information I recieved from the owner David before arriving. Franklin is somewhat remote but the hostel provided a van and a car making transportation to work very easy. Grocery store is less than 10 min from the hostel by car. The hostel itself has nice social areas, a spacious kitchen espically compared to other hostels I've stayed at and a shed with some very basic gym equipment and a table tennis table. The surronding nature is beautiful. David and his partner invited us for BBQs several times during my stay were we had great fun, David was also very quick to fix problems we brought up. Overall a great experience, created very dear memories at this hostel.

Worst experience ever, please stay away from here.

Me and my boyfriend called David around end of October/ beginning of November asking if he has some jobs position available and a place where to camp in our van. He told us about a picking job starting first day of December and that we could come, so we agreed.
We check in the Thursday, ready to start working the following Monday. At our arrival David showed us the “camping side of the hostel” = a ridiculous small piece of grass overload with tents all next to each other, a bunch of cooking gas camping stove under a little roof and couple of benches where you can sit around the tents.
He gave us our parking spot in front of the hostel telling us he will put our names tag in order to reserve that spot for us.

Please note: if you camp (tent or van) you are not allowed to use the inside of the hostel so you are force to stay outside between tents no matter what weather conditions are outside. (In that couple of benches outside)

He didn’t ask us if we needed pots, plate, knives which I guess you have to give him a deposit for that. Not the worst part, still understandable, maybe.

He didn’t showed us the bathroom which are the BACK OF A PIZZERIA across the parking lot where you see waitress going around plus the inside of the kitchen. And you have to pay for shower!!
So, you pay 110$ to camp plus if you want warm water you have to pay. Reading other reviews I saw that David explained that in this way you don’t have to wait in queue for shower (crazy right) or to avoid people using shower as laundry machine. But of course we all know that he just want to make more money over it.
Anyway we check in and we told him that we Will be away for the weekend so we agree to call him on Sunday in order to know our schedule for the following Monday.
On Sunday we called him and with our surprise he told us: “I have to refund you, you will not have a job from tomorrow, I don’t have enough parking space for you”
So….. we called a month in advance and just the day before he realised that he doesn’t have space and we cannot go to work Funny

He called us about an hour later to let us: “alright you can go to work but you need to sleep around the corner “

Around the corner = industrial parking lot between two trucks gate

we accepted as it was not fair for us to lose the job just because of its disorganisation and rudeness.

We try to stay in the hostel but after the first day we left. the situation was unbearable. no personal space, no space to eat, you have to stay in the garden all day.
Another girl left the hostel for the same reasons and David called her employer telling her to fire the girl because she dared to leave the hostel!

How ridiculous can this situation be?

Do not come to this hostel. during the picking season around the city is full of jobs that you can find independently, don’t give your money To a person who exploits backpackers by making them live in these conditions and making them use a bathroom in the back of a pizzeria. But hey… “I’m going to invite you for a bbq” we want fair living conditions not a bbq!

I would really like to see him living in such conditions (which I don’t think is legal to put all those tents in that little garden)
And of course people stay there longer, there is such a luck of hostel around, but that’s not an excuse to treat backpacker like this

Please please, stay away from this place!

Probably David answers will be like “yes but you still took the job”

Of course I did, you don’t care about me, I don’t care about you!

Where do I start.
1, David kept my deposit.
2, Not a hostel, a glorified cabin that you pay the owner weekly by bank and left to deal with mess by other people.
3, Working hostel with 2 showers and 12 people coming back at the same time to use the limited water.
4, Heating is tightly controlled and turned off so a few people slept in their clothes.
5. I got a job from this but this is not guaranteed.
6. Very remote, nothing around
7, More expensive than the hostels in Hobart, were they actually clean. Have facilities and organise events.
8, Owner is highly emotional and you have to occasionally deal with this

A really nice hostel!!
We spent 5 month there, we worked in an apple farm and it was really nice.
Is a small house in the middle of nature, the kitchen is good, there’s the tv with Netflix, the rooms and beds are really comfortable. Outside there is a porch with a couch where you can enjoy the view. David is a really honest and nice person, I recommend going there.

The best backpacking hostel ever. Nice location , nice community, big kitchen. I stayed there for 3 months and that make me feel like I am home with those beautiful people. David, the owner, is very lovely person. He remembers every one in the hostel and help out a lot with finding jobs. I really enjoyed the time staying there. Miss Little Davil so much.
