As an independent hotel owner in America, I support independent hotels when I travel. That being said, I am rarely impressed. |That changed when I spent a week at the lovely 1902 Kurrara Guest House. The location is quiet, yet close enough to Katoomba's great restaurants and shops. The owners, Ian and Evelyn have included so many nice touches in and out of the rooms. They are a delightful couple. Breakfast has more offered than anyone could ever need. |Definitely choose this guest house. I travel to Katooms twice a year to visit my brother. Kurrara is the first place I want to go back to over and over. I have found the best. I’m sure you will agree.

Beautiful old home, well decorated and maintained. We didn’t get to use the common rooms very much, as we were out most of the day. |We met Iain at check-in and he showed us our room, then never saw either of the hosts for the rest of our stay.|Our room was on the second floor in the Lily Premium Suite, which was a good size. It had all the amenities. The bed was very comfortable and kept us warm under the electric blankets. The room itself gets cold overnight as we turned off the electric heater, and the bathroom was quite cold in the morning to have a shower. The radiator did not project any heat.|The breakfast buffet was good, however do get there right at 8am, because otherwise you’ll miss out on some of the best stuff that is not replenished. The lady works very hard to cook the hardboiled eggs (on demand only) the croissants (only 4 at a time). One hour is very short to have 16 guests in and out. While I didn’t mind, I have never been at a B&B where they ask you to clear your table. The sunroom at the back was quite chilly as the overnight temperature was around 4-6C.|Coffee was not available in the morning before the dining room door opened at 8am.|The whole house and our bedroom did smell quite musty and some people with asthma or other chronic respiratory disorders may have some issues.|Overall, I was a bit disappointed and had probably set my expectations too high after reading the raving reviews.

The guest house is over 120 years old and very well maintained for its age. Its like stepping back in time. We were here during winter and the rooms were very warm. Rooms and bedding were also exceptionally clean. Definitely recommend this place for a visit to the mountains. The host was very friendly and polite.

A lovely place to stay and everyone was so helpful.. The only reason for a 4 star for such a beautiful room is the pressure in the shower was very low and that is probably due to my room being upstairs and possible old plumbing. I highly recommend this beautiful guest house.

The two rooms that we saw downstairs were excellent. Spacious, well appointed and full of character. Some attention to detail and maintenance is needed though.
No exhaust fan in the bathroom was a bit of a problem but not onerous. Only one of the light fittings operational was a problem as it was the one adjacent to the mirror that was not working. Especially for my wife. The electrical fitting above the basin taped up with black tape wasn't attractive and rendered the fitting unusable. Maybe an electrician could help with that.
The main issue for both my wife and I was the WiFi. We had difficulties connecting and the connection dropped out often. We eventually gave up and used our mobiles as hotspots to connect then we had no problems. All four of our devices had problems with the WiFi.
So, if you are travelling for business, or pleasure, and need, or like, a reliable WiFi internet connection then stay somewhere else. You won't find it here.
Response:
WiFi: We found the the 'whole house coverage' as you described to us to be extremely variable. There was a better signal strength in the dining/lounge area than in our room. This was confirmed by the other guest that took her laptop out to the breakfast/lounge area because she had a problem with the connection in her room. The signal strength in our room, or on the verandah, was middling, that was not the issue. The problem was not the signal strength, the problem was that the gateway failed to allocate a local IP address, which I tried to explain to you at the time, and that has nothing to do with our provider. IF there was an issue with the provider then it was your provider, not ours. Given that we were able to connect all four devices through a local hot spot I am certain that the issue was not our provider. The other issue was that if we were able to connect to the gateway the connection dropped regularly. It was as if the gateway timed out on the connection and it would drop. This is not a 'provider' issue, and it is not a 'settings' issue, although you said that it was a 'software' issue at the time. I am computer literate enough to know that that was not the case, but you didn't want to listen at the time.
Eggs: The lady in the breakfast room specifically told me, when I asked for two boiled eggs, that there was a limit of one egg per guest. There was no mention shortages due to bird flu, or any other reason. Luckily my wife did not want hers, so I had it, but they had to be on two separate plates in case other guests 'misunderstood' me getting two boiled eggs. Her words, not mine.

Cozy historic cottage . The whole place is quaint warm and most of all clean. This old house is well kept but of course made of wood so that is to be expected you will hear it when you walk on the second floor , Duh?! We stayed in the smallest room but it was enough space to be comfortable and to move around . The bed was super comfy it was hard to get out of it and there was adequate heating in the room. I guess the reason for the very good rating instead of excellent was just that the water mixer needs fixing. We didnt complain but will advise on our way out. Things get broken so unfortunately it was on our time here. The hosts were lovely Ian and evelyn in welcoming us and making sure we are happy and attended to. The light breakfast was nice , good amounts of breads selection theres berries and stone fruits yoghurt , a selection cereal muesli , many teas (which i love) and all sorts of milk selection. Lovely tea cups and saucerz . They also offer little sweet snacks for afternoon tea and the fireplace lit up in the afternoon which I think is amazing. We also used their entertainment room which got up to date movies which we also enjoyed . This area is about 12 mins walk to the restaurants and shops and about 20 mins to echo point which is great to burn off the breakfast hehe. There is also a bus stop which is about 5mins walk if you want to dont want to walk that much. A lovely experience we will consider coming back.

We booked 3 rooms here last minute. My partner and I arrived at 1:35pm (check in being at 2pm) to take a look and see if it was possible to check in early. The property was locked with a note to call a mobile for check in. Another couple from overseas was waiting outside as they had emailed prior about checking in early however no one there to let them in. When I called the number provided a lady responded to a very rude tone “is it 2pm already? I’m out shopping but I can get the housekeeper to take your bags in.” So our first impression of the staff was poor. We didn’t mind waiting but it was the way we were spoken to. When we did check in, the house itself is beautiful and exactly how you would expect a historic house. The floor creaks with every step and you can hear every sneeze and conversation through the walls. Lots of afternoon tea options which is nice and cute spaces to sit. THERE IS NO AIRCON ! Yes I know this is normal for historic homes however it was 30 degrees during our stay so the upstairs rooms were boiling. If we knew how hot it was going to be inside the rooms we wouldn’t have booked. The worst was how the staff treated the guests. My father in law was up early and went downstairs to make a coffee and was rudely told to get out while she was setting up breakfast. We watched the same woman rudely speak with another couple as well. All of our interactions with the staff made the experience unwelcoming and we will not be back.
