If you want to stay in a cottage (old guardhouse) next to the prison then this is for you. Beds are modern and comfortable even if the kitchen area is a bit basic. Up on the hill near the prison so no privacy out front, but there is a walled backyard with a picnic table. Enjoyable and unusual place to stay in a great twon

We booked 2 cottages for our family of 9. We just wanted a different experience from the usual. It was raining when we arrived but the receptionist, Stephanie was very bubbly and helpful. The cottages were former wardens' accommodations and hence it is located just next to the Fremantle Prison which is now a tourist attraction. The rooms and fittings were rather rudimentary and there is only one heater for the entire cottage. So it's rather cold in the evening for us in the bedrooms. Also, there is no shelter between the cottages.||It's really basic but if you want to experience something rustic and different, this is worth a try. I think it's probably only worth staying not more than a night.

Donโ€™t get caught out staying here in summer like we did. 40+ degree temperatures and no air conditioning. Who doesnโ€™t have air conditioning these days especially in places like Perth. We just assumed it did. We wonโ€™t make that mistake again.

It is interesting to live in a historical cottage ( house of the women prison guardians) .. The Fremantle prison is world heritage ...we rent the unit 4 - furnitures are simple , with Tv , wifi and large kitchen ... With your keys you have access to the YHA , which located inside the old women prison... Interesting to visit . By the way it is not easy to find the cottage ... You should go to Fremantle prison main gate .. Then on the left side at 200 m you have the YHA, and you check in there . The cottage are under YHA management .

I found this cottage while browsing through booking.com. I picked it because the price was reasonable, for it's closeness to fremantle markets & town.||What i didn't know (and only found out on checking in) was that these cottages were run by the YHA (Youth Hostel Association) and that the cottages were a part of the Fremantle prison complex.||There are three units to the cottages. Each unit consists of 2 bedrooms, a kitchen/dining and a bathroom. Our unit 6 could sleep 6 people - 1 queen bed and 2 single bunkbeds. There is a small lawn in front. The cottages used to be the prison wardens residence.||The cottages have a real colonial feel to them.....timber floors and old furnishings. The kitchen was well equipped. There wasnt central heating so it did get a bit cold at night.||There was ample parking, but shared with the prison-cell rooms of the YHA. Since the cottages were run by the YHA, we had access to the rest of the YHA - we could wander around the old prison-cells which have been turned into hotel rooms, we could use their washing machines, play table tennis etc.||It's 5 min walk to fremantle markets and the fremantle oval (for footie fans), and shops/food.||A unique experience!
