Excellent gallery that displays local contemporary art. The historic jail is worth a visit in its own right, and the interaction between the art and the space can add an additional dimension to the pieces.

Yeah honestly it was rather boring. With extremely expensive art slapped on some of the walls (that looks like it could have been created by any random person). The photos on google made it seem like it was more around showing off the old gaol.

Recently visited this place. The prison itself is not big. The art pieces are usually displayed in prison cells. The particular exhibition on display wasn't that great tbh but nevertheless it's fine to visit here if your in Newcastle.

✨ We visited to see the Argo Pacifico, the current installation & it was amazing! Every room of the Lock-up has been transformed into a room of a cruise ship for your to enjoy, right here in Newy! And it's free!

Wonderful asset for Newcastle. The novel large and small cells make the works help small works concentrated and larger works breathe.

Visited The Lock-up on a spur of the moment. It is a double whammy attraction, being that it, as stated, an art gallery as well as a historical site, being the old police station as well. You can wander around it the old cells and even see an old padded cell.

It's a very interesting art gallery set up in an old prison. It's worth a visit! Entry is free, but you can donate $5 at the entrance if you like. I think the art is for sale as well. The prison cells are interesting to see, one cell was padded and had fingernail scratches on the door... 👻 We visited on a Sunday afternoon and it wasn't crowded.
