I hate to rubbish a place....but. We booked for 4 nights in The Fremantle Doctor Suite, which was advertised as luxury accommodation. We knew it would be first floor with no lift, and did have 7 items of luggage. We had to carry the cases up an external staircase, poorly lit at night, through a shared kitchenette, to the door marked Fremantle Doctor Suite. If we had been in some of the other upstairs suites we would have then had to go down some internal stairs and back up again. Going into our "suite" we saw a small double bed, with very little space around. On the wall opposite the end of the bed a bench held some appliances and tea and coffee. In the room there was just one small wardrobe and no sign of ensuite or the like. The window looked out onto a blank wall, seemingly inches away. After some time we found a key hanging up and, exploring, found an unmarked door down the corridor. The key fitted and inside was a bathroom - was it ours - was it shared - could we make ourselves at home there - who knows, but we used it. If you opened the window, people sitting in the back yard had a good view straight in!. And the shared kitchen - it was at the back door, and if you wanted to sit and relax over a morning coffee, you had other guests, the cleaners, tradesmen etc wandering through. The laundry was in an outbuilding downstairs and was used by the cleaners to do all the bed linen etc. Line space and wash time were therefore both at a premium. The room itself was cluttered, untidy and quite dirty. Photos on the booking site showed a grand entrance, but in fact it was down a lane into the rear car park and through the back gate. The place was handy to the town, but any thought of a leisurely walk into town was spoiled by the down and outs who inhabited the small park which you walk past. Continual shouting and screaming, begging and vile abuse when you ignored them was not my idea of a good location. Was anything good about the place? There was a free bottle of nice wine and some chocolates in the room. Sheets were clean. The free bus stopped right outside. The yard had a table and chairs overhung by a laden grape vine which was a nice cool place to relax and unwind at the end of the day. It was, of course, shared, and like the kitchen, had much through traffic. To add some balance, the folk in the two bedroom downstairs suite showed us around theirs and it was very pleasant indeed. With luxury kitchen, ensuite, living areas and separate bedrooms all self contained behind the one door. Comments from others staying in upstairs suites seemed to indicate that it was only us who had to walk down shared corridors to get to our bathroom and kitchen. The only reason we stayed the full term was that they had our credit card details and would have charged us anyway!
