The Thebarton Community Centre stands on Kaurna Yarta—Kaurna land, which has always been a place of gathering, storytelling, and connection. Long before this building existed, the land beneath it was home to Kaurna Miyurna (Kaurna people), who met on these plains to share knowledge, care for Country, and uphold cultural traditions.

For the Kaurna people, places of gathering hold deep significance. Traditionally, meeting places were where stories were passed down, decisions were made, and relationships were strengthened. In this way, the Thebarton Community Centre, as a hub for people coming together, reflects an ancient practice of community and cultural exchange.

However, true community connection must come with respect for the land and its First Peoples. While the centre welcomes diverse cultures and events, its presence on Kaurna Country is an opportunity to acknowledge, honour, and include Kaurna perspectives.

The surrounding area, including Thebarton and the Karrawirra Pari (River Torrens), was a vital part of Kaurna life before colonisation. The river was a source of food, water, and cultural teachings. When European settlement displaced the Kaurna people, much of this land was disrupted, yet the spirit of Yarta (Country) remains. Recognising Kaurna history at places like the Thebarton Community Centre—through artwork, language, and community engagement—would strengthen respect and reconciliation.

For this place to truly reflect community spirit, it should embrace the voices of the First Peoples. Imagine Kaurna language woven into the signage, Kaurna stories shared in events, and local Elders invited to lead cultural activities. Such steps would make the centre not just a building, but a true space of belonging for all.

From a Kaurna perspective, the Thebarton Community Centre stands on land that has always been a meeting place. Its purpose aligns with Kaurna values of connection and sharing, but it also carries a responsibility: to honour the land’s First Peoples and their enduring culture. By embedding Kaurna presence in its spaces and programs, the centre can become not just a community venue, but a place of truth-telling, healing, and unity.

Excellent facilities, modern contemporary Community Centre. One of the best Community Centres in the State. A range of areas available for small, medium and large sized events. Plenty of on-site car parking. Hopefully the upcoming North South Corridor Infrastructure doesn't impact on this architecturally building

Attended a family program.

Very nice modern hall with plenty of parking.
The only disadvantage is parking has only one access from the south road.

New, modern building with spacious areas and great facilities. Have been there for numerous community events. Is still holding up well after many years of operation. The annual Japanese festival is held there now and is a great venue for it as it has grown in size over the years. Great big expansive lawn for the kids to play on too. Adjacent to other modern parks with play equipment.
