I was taken to Lismore base after suffering a young age stroke. The doctors and nurses were incredible, they treated me quickly and in a very friendly manner. Their care saved me from drastic side effects. Thank you to all involved in my care.

It’s taken me eight months to fully process my experience after the birth of my daughter.

While I can wholeheartedly say that the midwifery group program I participated in was outstanding, with an incredible team providing exceptional care, my postpartum experience took a dramatic turn for the worse after my C-section and during my stay in the maternity ward.

Of the four midwives who attended to me, the older, more experienced midwives were compassionate, empathetic, and professional. Unfortunately, the two younger midwives fell far short of these standards.

One midwife, for example, unnecessarily collected a urine sample from me while I stood in front of a male hospital employee who was administering my daughter’s hearing test. When I expressed my discomfort, she dismissed my concerns, saying, “It’s not a big deal.”

The same midwife also minimized my pain, telling me it “shouldn’t be that bad” and suggesting I might be exaggerating—despite admitting she had never experienced childbirth herself.

Another midwife mishandled the insertion of a catheter, despite my repeated attempts to guide her. She inserted it incorrectly twice, causing significant discomfort. When I requested a different midwife, she argued but eventually complied. The replacement midwife successfully completed the procedure without issue. However, later, while I was alone in the bathroom, the first midwife confronted me, blaming me for her inability to insert the catheter properly.

These are just a few examples of what I endured, but they highlight a troubling pattern of dismissive, unprofessional, and even harmful behavior. At no point should a woman, especially one recovering from childbirth, be made to feel humiliated or disregarded.

While I cannot recommend staying at this hospital after giving birth, I do strongly recommend applying for the midwifery group program—it was a shining light in an otherwise challenging experience.

Can't thank enough the midwifes that look after my partner before during and post the birth of our first child.

Extremely professional and caring some times with some much needed humor.

We had a great experience and excellent care in all aspects.

Thanks again!!!

I spent 5 hours here, just spending time with a loved one who had recently undergone a surgery. The staff throughout all of the hospital that I encountered were so lovely. Wow. It almost made me want to have a surgery (jks).

Mostly I was in the women’s health ward on level 8. I hope the nurses and doctors know how valued they are by our community. They’re real superheros.

Anyway, I just wanted to say thanks for the professionalism and care and love that clearly is there. It is so appreciated.

We recently had the pleasure of giving birth to our baby girl at the Women’s Care Unit at Lismore Base Hospital, and I can’t praise the staff enough! From the moment we arrived, the team was incredibly caring, attentive, and reassuring.

Throughout the entire process, they made both my partner and I feel supported and well-informed, which eased our anxieties during labor. The level of professionalism and compassion was outstanding, and every staff member went above and beyond to ensure we were comfortable and cared for.

After the birth, the aftercare was equally impressive. The nurses took the time to answer all our questions and provided valuable guidance as we adjusted to our new roles as parents. We felt genuinely cared for, and it made our experience all the more special.

Thank you to Dr Steele and Dr Addenbrooke and the entire team of the Women’s Care Unit for making our journey into parenthood a beautiful one. We are forever grateful!
