Had the “flathead “ meal
I’ve worked in seafood for 30 years and seen all types of flathead used in retail and cafe/ pub meals
The fish served was Basa. No relation to any flathead around and a freshwater fish to boot.
Disgusting. Couldn’t eat it and I LOVE my fish

Amazing food and a nice experience.

We came here over a few days and it was a pleasant experience. We came to relax on the weekend to wine and dine before a band graced the stage.

Drinks are very affordable as a member and the food is quality. I wish I had more yummy space for more. Plate sizes are larger so bring those stretchy pants!

If you like a slap, there are plenty of gaming machines in the middle of the venue and multiple bars on the outer edges.

They have a stage which hosts bingo and bands and the staff are friendly up inside the venue.

The only issue we had was the person in the car park being very rude to us while we entered. It was uncomfortable with the way he approached the car by standing in front of it holding up his hand to stop. He didn’t say hello at all just ‘what are you doing’ as in why are we in the car park. Perhaps a little training may help with his approach.

That didn’t detract from each of the lovely team members we encountered during our visits but it certainly shined a light on that bad interaction.

Few things of note. Have not eaten here for a long time. Couple of years. The menu has barely changed and very limited. There was not even one vegetarian option. The specials on the board are very pricey. The food on 2 occasions was cold in different parts of the plate. On the second occasion I took my plate up. Bangers and Mash.. COLD gravy! Yuck. Once heated it was delicious in parts. There are still little issues though such as potatoes form a skin from sitting too long, or peas not soft. They need to do a serious rehaul to improve this place. Even when I took my plate back to get it fixed there seemed to be little care from the chefs and they were mute and no apology or offer of recompense. Not good enough!

Today at 5:35 pm, we arrived at the Penrith RSL club.

After I signed in with my digital ID, Michael, who was behind the desk, asked to see my ID, which I provided on my phone. He then proceeded to check my address to see if I lived within 5 kilometres.

He said, “You’re in the 5ks, so you need to be a member or get my member to sign you in.”

I said, “I’m sure you’ll find that the law has changed. I don’t need to be a member within 5Ks anymore.”

He said, “This club hasn’t changed its rules. Clubs in the area have, but not here. You still need to be a member if you live within 5 kilometres.”

I continued to tell him, “No, it’s not correct. The law has changed in New South Wales.”

He said, “You need to pay six dollars to be a member or you can leave.”

I said, “You’re forcing me to be a member, and that’s not right.”

He said, “I’m not forcing you. If you’re within 5 kilometres, you need to be a member to get in, which is not correct.”

I kept telling him that the law had changed in New South Wales.

As I didn’t want to cause a scene, I got an application form to join while I was waiting for the lady doing membership registrations for someone else. I was thinking to myself, “This is wrong. They’re forcing me to be a member when I don’t need to be.”

I asked the lady who was doing the registration. She was very polite and asked if I’d like to speak to the duty manager. I accepted her request.

In the meantime, Michael was still yelling at me, saying that I needed to be a member and pay six dollars. He said, “It’s only six dollars. You get your money back in no time.”

When I spoke to the duty manager, she told me the same thing as Michael had told me. She said, “This club hasn’t changed its rules.”

It’s higher up in the club, they had told them that everyone needed to be a member if they lived within 5 kilometres. I told her that the law had changed, and I didn’t need to be a member anymore.

As I was getting nowhere, my friends and I decided to leave. We didn’t like the way we were being treated. They were acting like we were idiots and didn’t know the law.

It felt like they were forcing people to be members when they didn’t need to be anymore.

I have no issues showing my ID, as the system allowed me to sign in digitally. Before Michael demanded to see my address, I had a temporary member slip issued to me. He then checked my address in a folder.

I feel like I was discriminated against for some reason, and it was really embarrassing because my friends with me were from another state.

I have no issues being a member if that’s the requirement, but I know it’s no longer necessary.

I want this rectified so they’re following the correct New South Wales policy about signing in to clubs.

I also want an apology by the way, my friends and myself were treated

Good food options. The food was always coming out fresh. We went for dinner service and the place was full but the way it’s set out it didn’t feel cramped or loud at all.
There’s no bottomless drink options here.

The new chef at Maze Cafe has really made an impact! The menu options are fantastic - they change regularly and are consistently high quality in flavour and presentation.

Our current favourites are the American BBQ (for him) - a generous serve of roast potatoes, chargrilled corn on the cob, chicken wings and pork ribs in a slightly addictive BBQ sauce 🙂

*My* favourite is the Perch and Prawns in creamy garlic sauce served with fresh salad and really crispy chips. Plate was *wiped clean* 🙂

Leave room for a trip to the dessert cabinet ... carrot cake, lemon merangue, rocky road slice, friands and the list goes on ... tea and coffee is great too!

Staff are friendly and helpful - there's lots of parking and the club provides a high level of comfort and cleanliness throughout.

Maze Cafe is highly regarded by members and you definitely need to have a look at the new menu!
