This is our 5th time back to the Commonwealth, but just found it this time pretty average, staff okay - the friendliest staff member was the cleaner, lovely person. The rooms and bathroom definitely need a paint but for the price of $119 for room without bathroom or $140 with bathroom good for Newcastle (no hairdryer). It is sometimes the small things in hospitality that make all the difference, no care factor I felt here. Comparing to a place we just stopped at in Albury, friendly staff, even a free but fab breakfast, of coffee and toast, awesome. I shd mention though the food at the Commonwealth is lovely, staff good, lunch and dinner available. So by all means stay at the Commonwealth as good for a night, just basic.

I often went to the Commonwealth for a meal and always enjoyed their pub classics, especially the crumbed lamb cutlets, unfortunately not today. The lamb was overcooked and chewy. I asked for veggies and mash as sides. The mash was almost tasteless, and the vegetables, although cooked al dente to my liking, were bland, as if just steamed or microwaved for a few minutes. There was absolutely nothing peppering about the pepper sauce I paid almost $4 extra for. Plus, it was all served lukewarm. In short, it was no better than an RSL meal, for which I would have paid half the price. The only saving grace was the staff, friendly and helpful.

11 affordable rooms above bars and eating areas in a central city pub. Ticks all the no frills boxes. Clean, great mattresses, and quiet (solid brick walls muffle noise from downstairs .. even on a busy Friday night).

Zero parking even on nearby streets.
Staff amazing though. Dropped everything to check us in and make sure we had everything we needed.
Bed very uncomfortable with springs digging into my back.
Doors so squeaky, WD40 is your friend guys. Very basic but is good for a night.

Great Trivia night. Me and my work lot head there every Tuesday night for food and trivia. The food is a great with a number of items on the menu. The trivia is a great level of questions and fun all round. The host of the trivia night is always fun and delivers a great evening.
