Canto is a restaurant located inside the university. Just opened in the 2024 academic year. There is a variety of food and drinks, good atmosphere, good service staff. It's a great place to sit and chat and eat together. There is also a view of the newly built building "Engineering & Innovation Place (Building506)". Moreover, there is 10% discount for JCU students.

The food was nice but despite me being pleasant to the staff, I didn't feel welcome. In conversation, they mentioned they support students but didn't elaborate. I was there to work on assignments during lunch, which they knew. Other reviews I read after the fact said they have a 10% discount for students; it certainly wasn't offered to me. I returned one more time and still didn't feel welcome. I am a supporter of small business, so I will give them one more chance.

Regularly eat from the sides menu, including, sweet potato fries, beer battered fries and the onion rings, all of which are generally good however the Southern fired chicken burger is terrible, the ingredient combination makes zero (0) sense.

A 'southern fried chicken burger, yet has no sauce to at least compensate for the dry chicken, NO PICKLES?!, and worst yet CHEESE on a chicken burger, thats genuinely a crime.

Just visited the new Canto at JCU. Wow! Had an awesome couple of pizzas. Probably the best vegetarian pizza's and prosciutto and cheese pizza's I have ever had. Great food, and fantastic coffee. Cheers to the future for this awesome little dining experience.

Second time coming to canto and they were amazing. Always polite and happy to answer questions about the food . Lots of people in my group have allergies or preferences and they were more than happy to accomodate us and ensure we had a good meal. And the atmosphere is a nice difference from your usual loud pub setting.
Definitely would come again!!!

Ordered a beer that came out flat, asked for another and received one that was only very marginally better. But what really ground my gears was finding out that the two younger members of our student cohort had an automatic 10% student discount applied to their order without having to show any student ID. Whereas myself and another mature aged student of the same age, did not. I wouldn't automatically expect a student discount, but I do think it's pretty poor to apply it to two others in our group without asking any of us for student ID.

I had the best pancakes I've ever eaten in my life at Canto today. Amazing nuts and berries on top. It was big enough to share so they brought us some plates to split it. I've never had a bad meal here
