A Hidden Gem with Incredible Coffee

At first glance, Bourton Road Café is quite unassuming, but the moment you walk in, you’re welcomed by warm smiles and friendly service. I initially thought the signs printed on what looked like a home printer and simple décor might be a sign of a forgettable experience, but I couldn’t have been more wrong.

Not only were the staff members absolutely delightful, but the food was fantastic—and the coffee... YUMMO! I wouldn’t call myself a coffee snob, but I do know that Australians take their coffee seriously, and this place exceeded my expectations. In fact, it was possibly the best coffee I’ve had during my visits to Australia—which is saying a lot, considering I’m married to an Aussie coffee lover!

Lately, I’ve been reducing my caffeine intake and switching to decaf, which can often be a disappointment. Not here! I ordered a Flat White with almond milk, and it was SO frickin’ good. The crema they got from the almond milk was insane—so smooth and rich, it didn’t even feel like decaf.

The food was just as impressive. I had the steak sandwich and fries, while my husband ordered the bacon and egg roll with hashbrowns and banana chocolate bread. I didn’t try the egg sandwich, but judging by his reaction (basically drooling), I’d say it was a hit. The brisket on my steak sandwich was melt-in-your-mouth tender, almost like butter—incredible. If I had one tiny critique, it could have used a tad more sauce, but that’s a small detail compared to the overall amazing experience.

If you’re looking for exceptional coffee, friendly service, and delicious food in Merrimac, don’t overlook this place. We’ll definitely be back!

Update: Even Better the Second (and Third) Time!

After our first visit, we loved Bourton Road Café so much that we came back two more times! Each visit was just as wonderful as the first. Today, we had a strawberry macadamia scone and the most amazing fruit tart—both were absolutely delicious.

We also had the pleasure of meeting Angie and Raj, who are super friendly and doing a fantastic job of turning the café around. It’s clear they care about their customers and the experience they create.

Sadly, we’re heading back to the U.S. tomorrow, but this café has been a highlight of our trip. I’m so glad we stumbled upon it, and I’ll definitely be back whenever we return to the Gold Coast.

Highly recommend this place for anyone looking for great coffee, friendly service, and incredible baked goods in Merrimac!

Incredible. The whole team was awesome. The lady who served us was bubbly and helpful. The food was top quality, from the kitchen and the cabinet. We grabbed 2 coffees each, so we could take one away. It was a joy to see the team interacting with other guests because they were so happy. Highly recommended, great value and great service

A small suburban corner cafe where you can stop during your walk, quick catch up with friends, or just to chill. Super friendly staff and great service. Love having my favourite decaf and feeling nice breeze coming through 🤗 They bake own muffin which you have to try when they freshly come out the oven! A few GF option available.

What a nice little cafe! Service, atmosphere, food and coffee was superb. Good selection of cabinet food to choose from. We had the gluten free banana bread and orange and poppy seed cake which was fresh and tasty. Pretty spacious seating area for a small cafe which is also great. Thanks for having us!

The closing time on Google for this cafe is currently 4:00. There is no mention of the kitchen closing at 12:45. I attempted to order at 12:45 and was refused kitchen service. I have never known any cafe to close its kitchen so early. As I have cancer I could not eat anything processed in the window and I explained I had walked 3km to this specific cafe because it was open until 4:00. The female employee on the register did not warn me in advance the kitchen was closed, did not apologise to me, and didn’t even have the courtesy or professionalism to bring me a menu - I had to seat myself and get a menu. She saw me do this because I asked politely if I could and yet claimed that she “didn’t realise” I took a menu. This is unacceptable - if you can’t give good customer service, don’t work in hospitality. Had I been in her position I would have offered the customer something, rather than option-locking them and letting them walk out with nothing but time wasted.
